Local Authorities: On-the-Ground Expertise

Donegal County Council & Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council will act as regional connectors, engaging the 5 border local authorities & the 11 district councils in NI, respectively. Both councils bring a proven track record of collaboration on air quality monitoring & fuel testing. They will coordinate sensor deployment, leveraging local knowledge to identify monitoring locations & engaging communities such as schools & hospitals. They will ensure a practical approach to data collection & public engagement while addressing cross-border regulatory & enforcement challenges. Donegal County Council & Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council will co-lead WP2 alongside University College Cork.

Public Health Integration

The All Island Institute of Public Health bridges the gap between research findings & policy implementation by providing cross-border public health expertise. Supporting the Departments of Health & Chief Medical Officers in both jurisdictions, IPH ensures that project outcomes translate into actionable, policy-focused recommendations. Their capacity to engage strategic stakeholders is crucial for driving long-term cooperation on clean air initiatives.

Academic Excellence & Technical Innovation

Queens University Belfast contributes unparalleled multidisciplinary expertise in air pollution research, addressing its societal, ecological & health impacts. Queens University Belfast will driving cutting-edge analyses of air quality issues & fostering cross-border knowledge exchange. Queens University Belfast will establish the island’s first independent solid fuel testing laboratory.

Ulster University integrates unique expertise in community co-development strategies, EHO-led partnerships, interdisciplinary health training, & long-term education programmes. Ulster University will also support stakeholder engagement & equity-focused approaches across the project.

Specialized Expertise from Universities

Universities including University College Cork, TU Dublin, University of Galway and Trinity College Dublin bring unique capabilities unavailable in NI or the border region.
• TU Dubin provides world-class air quality monitoring expertise & the Mobile Air Research Laboratory (MARL), a €1.1M facility offering real-time, high-resolution pollutant measurements, provided to the project at running costs only. They also provide extensive experience in analytical techniques to measure the chemical composition of the air, focusing on agricultural emissions & PM.
• A global leader in atmospheric research, University College Cork’s Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry contributes 25 years of expertise in air quality field campaigns, source apportionment, & sensor networks, with proven clean air policy impact.
• University of Galway offers unmatched expertise in real-time PM speciation & source attribution, pioneering methodologies underpinning the 2022 Solid Fuel Regulations in Ireland. University of Galway’s online instrumentation enables precise solid fuel speciation, & their unique indoor air quality research & outreach expertise enables the indoor air quality elements of the project & enhances public engagement
• Trinity College Dublin uniquely focuses on hotspot interventions, designing solutions such as green barriers & ventilation systems. Their work benefits vulnerable populations, delivering actionable recommendations for improving air quality in educational & healthcare settings.
